How to Have a Healthier Halloween! October 28 2014
Let’s face it—there’s a looming countdown that started this week (or maybe it’s been going on all month!) to your family’s trick-or-treating extravaganza! Many of our kids will come home with hoards of candy: big candy bars, little wrapped sweets, and all sorts of hard/soft/sugar-laden candy. Halloween is definitely about having fun, but that doesn't mean you have to abandon a healthy attitude altogether.
It’s smart, of course, to look over everything your kids bring home prior to eating for safety’s sake. But it’s just as important to review candy for health reasons! Be aware that your child may be bringing home a pillowcase full of candy with artificial colors, dyes, preservatives, and poor ingredients that don’t support brain health. Yikes!
So what’s a parent to do? For starters, consider rationing your child’s candy eating to a few pieces a day. Even better though is helping them make the choice for something healthier! Introduce the idea to swap out the whole candy stash (minus a few of their favorites, because come on . . .) with the Halloween Switch Witch. Exchanging that full bag of candy for a healthier alternative like a cool new toy, an exciting activity, and/or an outdoor experience will offer benefits far beyond just saving you from a trip to the dentist. Your children’s brains and bodies will thank you, and you’ll be helping your kids to understand healthy choices.
